Igorrotes Planting Rice, Island of Luzon, P. I. (Philippines), 1906

The proverbially lazy inhabitants of the Philippines are easily able to refute the accusation of laziness at the time of rice planting. Hundreds of millions of rice shoots are laboriously planted in the mud and slush of the rice fields every year. All day long, in the heat and glare of the tropical sun, men, women and children pursue the uncomfortable and tiresome task. They have to work in a stooping position, and up to their ankles or knees in mud and water. The glare of the sun is reflected from the black water, and this constant fiery glare pains and inflames the eyes. But as the rice is planted during the rainy season, often a tropical shower brings relief – and a drenching.

With the left hand they hold against the body a bundle of rice plants, which have been grown in a seed plot and handed out, so many in a bundle. With the right hand a shoot is seized from the bundle and plunged into the slime and with the extended forefinger thrust into the mud to take root. The fields have been plowed and harrowed while under water. Mud partitions separate the fields, and also prevent the water from draining off. The water is led downward from field to field and put to the utmost good use. Of course, all the laborious work of transplanting rice is entirely needless – as unnecessary in Luzon as in Louisiana. American methods will doubtless very gradually displace the inferior native methods.
