Jaffa, the Joppa of Bible Times, Palestine

In Palestine there are only two ports, and with Haifa’s  present supremacy, we witness the passing of Jaffa’s importance. It was once the gateway to the Holy Land, but today even Jaffa’s famed oranges go to the port of Haifa, for Jaffa has no sheltered haven where ships may ride at anchor. The shore line is straight and full of reefs. The landing of both passengers and freight is by small boats and this is always accomplished in the greatest disorder and with much noise.

However, Jaffa is full of geographic interest.  Five hundred miles to the north is Asia Minor. Three hundred miles to the southwest lies Egypt. About us roll the waves of the Mediterranean Sea. Back of us they stretch away until they break on the shores of Greece, Italy, and Spain, and sweep through the straits of Gibraltar, two thousand miles away, into the Atlantic Ocean.

The yellow, white and blue buildings that rise before us constitute the greater part of the city which houses a population of about 51.000. From here, Jaffa looks like a fortress. The tower we see at the top belongs to a monastery. Nearly half of the people of Jaffa are Mohammedans, about a fourth Jews, and the remainder Christians.

About Jaffa cling many memories. It is the site of the story of Jonah, and in addition to its memories of Dorcas and Peter, it was the port where nearly three thousand years ago were landed the cedars from Mount Lebanon for the temple in Jerusalem.
